Architecture Is a Language Problem

- Architecture Is a Language Problem
After nearly two decades in IT, I've realized something simple but fundamental. This insight changed the way I approach upcoming challenges.
Most architecture problems aren't technical; they're based in a linguistic problem.
Teams don't fail because they lack technology. Teams fail because business and tech use the same words but mean entirely different things.
Need an example?
When business says "fast," they mean time-to-market.
When IT says "fast," they mean system performance.
Both sides are right, and both are misunderstood.
That's why architecture isn't just about designing systems; it's about translating intent into clarity.
Bridging strategy and execution! Not through more diagrams or the next meeting marathon, but through shared understanding. Ideally, in a shared language, all engaged members are fluent in understanding and speaking!
My proven approach to being a successful architect? Be bilingual.
Speak value in the boardroom and design in the dev room. Taking care that both sides feel understood and really understand each other.
If architecture really is a language problem? What "translation gaps" have you seen most often in your projects?
